Hardwood Flooring

Benefits of a Hardwood Flooring Installation

Hardwood FlooringHardwood Flooring Longevity

With the introduction in the past ten to fifteen years of durable finishes that are easy to repair, hardwood floors can last for decades. Throughout the centuries, hardwood flooring has been a durable, design friendly and long lasting flooring of choice for the consumers.

Coziness and Warmth of Hardwood Flooring

In comparison to laminate, customers will often reflect on hardwood flooring being more pleasant and warm to walk on which comes from the natural make up of wood. Wood floors are an excellent insulator, thanks to its thousands of tiny air chambers per cubic inch, which hold in heat.

Got allergies? Hardwood floors do not provide any place for pollen, animal dander, mold, etc. to hide and thrive. Hardwood flooring is an excellent choice for anyone with any kind of environmental allergies.

Hardwood Flooring Types & Wood Specimens

Hardwood FlooringHardwood Flooring

Hardwood Flooring is just that – a solid piece of wood from inside out. Solid hardwood flooring comes from milled solid lumber and is available in unfinished or pre-finished forms. Unfinished solid wood floors need to be sanded on-site and finished after installation. Pre-finished solid wood floors are installation ready and do not require additional preparation.

Engineered Hardwood Flooring

Engineered hardwood flooring is manufactured with a real wood surface and several layers of different laminate or wood veneers. Unlike Hardwood Flooring, engineered flooring is moisture-resistant and suitable for basements. Both solid and engineered hardwood flooring are durable and long-lasting but engineered flooring is exceptionally strong thanks to its laminated layers.

Laminate Flooring

The following provides information on the benefits of laminate flooring:

Laminate FlooringVery Durable Surface

Unlike wood, which can dent, laminate flooring is almost impervious to dents and scratches. Laminate flooring has what’s called in the industry a “wear layer” that protects the photographic layer underneath. Some manufacturers, like Shaw, give very generous warranties on this wear layer.

No Bad Pieces

Unlike real hardwood, which comes with many imperfect pieces that need to be thrown out or re-engineered, there are no defects in laminate flooring.

Good for Moist Places

Laminate flooring can be installed in bathrooms, kitchens, and other places where you encounter “topical moisture” (as Mannington calls it). But it will not tolerate standing pools of water. However, let’s be clear that neither solid hardwood nor engineered wood can tolerate standing water, either. For heavy moisture, you need a very impervious surface like vinyl or tile.

Easy to Clean

Just use a vacuum or broom. Mop with a slightly damp mop. No floor waxing needed.

Resists Stains

Laminate flooring’s tough surface resists stains. And if you do get a stain, it’s easy to clean off.

Engineered wood flooring

Engineered Wood FlooringThis is an option that will satisfy the need for the elemental beauty of real hardwood flooring, yet with the simplicity and resilience of laminate flooring. Find out about the unique benefits that come with choosing engineered wood flooring.

Engineered wood flooring is real wood flooring, but is more stable than solid wood and is less susceptible to shrinking and expanding with changes in temperatures and humidity. The durability of engineered hardwood is increased by constructing the floor through the use of multiple wood layers.

Engineered Wood Floor is Pre-Finished

The top finish layer is pre-finished, which means that it’s already sanded and sealed. As soon as the floor has been laid, you can walk on it. By contrast, unfinished solid hardwood must be sealed, and this requires waiting time before use. Note: solid hardwood is available pre-finished, as well.

Engineered Wood Flooring Can Be Sanded

The advantage of engineered wood flooring versus laminate is that engineered wood can be sanded after scratches and dings develop. Two catches, though:

  • Limited Sanding
    – Engineered flooring cannot be sanded more than 1-3 times (depending on the thickness of the finish layer).
  • Professional Sanding Recommended
    – Because of the low tolerance for failure with sanding engineered wood, I seriously recommend that you have a professional do the sanding. It is very easy to gouge your engineered wood floor, revealing the plywood underneath.
Selecting Your StoneCambridge Floors offers natural stone tiles in a wide variety of colours and textures. It is important to note that natural stone tiles are distinct and unique: no two pieces are exactly the same and can even be vastly different. Always sort and view several pieces of the stone that is to be installed before the installation begins.

Characteristics of stone

  • Variations in natural stone are to be expected and embraced. Irregular markings, lines, veins and crystallization are not cracks or imperfections, but rather a natural part of the stone’s beauty.
  • May vary in thickness
  • May not have a perfectly smooth surface or straight edges and corners
  • Varies in hardness; select the appropriate stone for your application

  • One of the hardest and densest stones
  • Colours are incredibly varied, from absolute black to white leopard and almost every colour in between
  • Renowned for its beautiful, natural colour variations and durability

  • Often contains fossil marks and calcite sites
  • Colour ranges from earthy tones of greens and blues, to grays and dark browns
  • Texture varies between coarsely crystalline to very finely grained, with a wide variation of tiny shells and micro-skeletons deposited throughout

  • Features prominent swirls of veining, in a wide range of colours
  • Classic, timeless style that emulates elegance and luxury
  • Popular colours include Crema Marfil (beige tones) and Bianco Carrera (white, gray tones)

  • A hard, metamorphic rock converted from sandstone through heat and pressure
  • Available in many colours, but when pure it is light coloured
  • Tends to have a sugary or sparkly appearance and is very popular for exterior or commercial applications
  • Minimal flaking is expected due to the stone’s natural cleft finish

  • Features one of the most naturally slip-resistant surfaces available
  • Has one of the most dramatic colour variations of all natural stone, and these intense variations may even occur within the same piece of stone
  • Can appear to chip or flake in the first few months after installation—this will decrease over time as the layers even out

  • Known for its distinctive cavities caused by water and gases percolating through the stone. These are typically filled with colour-matched cement, epoxy, or polymer resins.
  • Regular wear and tear can cause filling materials to come loose; maintenance may include filling in holes that appear
  • Available in warm, earthy colours like walnut, cream, and ivory
Stone Care

Filled & Honed Travertine

  • Stone can be very porous and may be susceptible to staining, making the sealing process extremely important.
  • Sealers do not make stone water or stain proof, but instead increase its reaction time to contaminants, allowing you to clean up before the stone’s surface is penetrated.
  • Sealing stone before and after grouting is advisable since fine grout colour particles can stain stones with higher porosity or surface voids.

  • Sealing is the most important initial step toward routine stone care.
  • Spills should always be wiped up immediately—particularly anything acidic which can etch through the protective sealant barrier.
  • Regularly sweep to remove dirt and debris that can damage the stone’s surface and clean with a pH-neutral cleaner that does not contain acid, bleach or ammonia.
  • Towel drying will help prevent streaking, especially on polished surfaces.

  • In high traffic areas, deep cleaning is suggested every 6-12 months.
  • Avoid using cleaners with acid, bleach or ammonia, which will etch and discolour the stone.
  • Remember that stone wears naturally over time, adding to its beauty.

Bianco Macchiato Marble SEALING

  • Sealing grout is very important as it is extremely porous.
  • If you start noticing your grout joints darkening when they are exposed to water, it is time to reseal.

  • Make sure that cleaners are pH neutral or grout compatible.
  • Always clean up dirt and spills promptly to keep it from soaking into the grout.
  • Using a grout compatible cleaner regularly will reduce the need for deep cleaning in the future.

  • In high traffic areas, deep cleaning is suggested every 6-12 months (perhaps more often in wet areas such as showers where grease and soap build-up can accumulate).
  • Avoid using cleaners with acid, bleach or ammonia.

Stone Enhancer Sealer (left) vs. unsealed stone PENETRATING

  • Usually has no surface sheen
  • Maintains natural colour of stone
  • Penetrates stone to form a barrier just below the surface, making it more resistant to stains

  • Type of penetrating sealer
  • Darkens and enriches the natural colours of the stone, often significantly changing its appearance
  • Most enhancers must be buffed off the surface after application to prevent excess sealer from clotting and tracking (enhancers cannot be removed and should be used with caution.)

  • Adds a semi or high gloss finish, enhancing the natural colours of the stone
  • Creates a surface coating to help repel oil and water
  • Becomes the “traffic” layer and is subject to wear, therefore requiring regular maintenance

Carpet Flooring

Carpet FlooringCarpet FlooringCambridge Floors and Interiors offer a great selection of Vancouver carpeting options for both residential and commercial needs. We offer Vancouver carpet flooring installation services throughout and the Lower Mainland, British Columbia.

Heat efficiency in the home starts from the floor up and statistically carpet provides the most warmth of any floor covering and is the most efficient way to add coziness and comfort to a home. Wouldn’t you rather step onto nice soft carpet when you wake up in the morning, instead of a cold hard floor?

Carpet flooring will give you softness under foot by cushioning your footfalls and reducing fatigue. Carpeting allows you and your family to curl up on the floor to watch TV or just relax.

Design Versatility

Carpet flooring provides the necessary textural relief now that there is such an increased focus on clean lines and simplicity in interior design. Carpeting forms the basis of your room and will affect, and set off all other colours and furnishings you choose to put in your home. It offers a large array of choice and can add colour, pattern and of course texture to your interior design.

Carpeting your home will soften harsh sounds and create a quieter, more peaceful living environment. As one of the most effective acoustical building materials, carpet will reduce noise generation in two ways – at floor level by cushioning objects hitting the floor, for example footsteps or dropped items, and by absorbing other sounds around your home without reducing the quality of projected sound such as your voice, or music. Contact Cambridge Floors & Interiors about your Vancouver carpet flooring installation today.

Vinyl Flooring

Vinyl FlooringVinyl FlooringDesign Flexibility

Vinyl sheet flooring and tile are available in myriad styles and colors. Vinyl tile is available in shapes that can be custom cut and laid out in patterns using different colors or finishes. Tiles can be arranged, for example, to depict a corporate logo or to guide traffic in a hospital or retail setting. Virtually any look can be obtained to suit any decor, including classic looks that simulate wood and ceramic. Custom-made designs are easily created using sheet vinyl flooring.

Vinyl flooring reduces noise and provides comfort underfoot. Unlike such hard surfaces as wood, laminate, terrazzo or ceramic tile, vinyl floors have “give” and thus are referred to as “resilient” flooring.

Vinyl flooring is durable and time-tested, maintaining its beauty under heavy foot traffic and use. It is moisture and stain resistant, so spills can be easily removed. When compared with alternative materials, vinyl offers an attractive installed cost with economical maintenance over the life of the floor.

Tile Flooring

Tile FlooringEase of Maintenance

While no floor remains entirely maintenance free, ceramic tile comes about as close at it can to being service free. Short of the tile application of the occasional sealant, applied once every four years or so, tile flooring requires only the regular cleaning that any flooring surface would require. With the installation of grout, tile becomes almost impervious to water damage, and can be virtually hosed off if necessary. Many specialty products are currently available that assist greatly in tile maintenance and upkeep, all of which can be found in nearly any home goods provider or supermarket.

There is a tile option for nearly any application, and your imagination and creativity are your only limitations when installing tile. From porticos in a dining room to a tiled hearth in front of a fireplace, you can adapt tile to nearly any surface, indoors or out. Tile’s adaptability has been exploited throughout Europe, and examples for tile floors can be seen in kitchens, living rooms, dining rooms and even bedrooms. In some destinations abroad, it is not uncommon to find an entire house tiled wall to wall, in an effort to keep cool.

Consider what look you want to achieve with your space. We have a variety of sizes, finishes and textures. From elegant and contemporary to rustic and natural – there is a perfect tile for your application. Smaller tiles can create a busy, vibrant feel, while larger format tiles can create a seamless, continuous look.

Remember: floor tile can also go on walls, but wall tile cannot be used on the floor.
