Through all of life’s trials and tribulations, every so often you are blessed in meeting someone who is truly special. Through acts of kindness and giving back I believe we give thanks.

For a few cold weeks in January 2008, we went through a hiring process to find a new administration person At Cambridge Floors. One of the resumes that came across my desk was that of 26 year old Katie Walberg. I had known Katie on a personal level for many years prior and had always enjoyed her friendship. Her job experience and references checked out and I had no concerns over switching to a more professional arrangement. The decision was made to hire her on.

Katie has a personality that draws you in; always smiling and upbeat, an eternal optimist while also being very real and rational.  The staff appreciated these qualities and instantly took a liking to her.

In December 2009, I was overseas on business when I received a phone call. Katie had collapsed in the showroom and was rushed to the hospital. She had suffered a seizure. I was very concerned and wanted to be kept informed on her progress. 24 hours later I received another phone call, this time it was Katie. She was of course upbeat, bright and cheerful, hiding whatever concerns she had. She told me the news. Doctors had found a brain tumour and they needed to operate urgently; she was going in for surgery within a couple hours. Acting so brave, she waited until the last minute to inform me of the surgery so I would stay and complete my trip. Her courage and thoughtfulness was emotional and inspiring and my respect for her reached new levels.

After a sleepless night I got word that the surgery was a complete success. The tumour was benign and she would make a complete recovery. I arrived back home and visited her in the hospital. All bandaged and laying in her bed, surrounded by friends and family, she gave me a big smile. The room was filled with flowers and get well wishes.

About six months later Katie was getting a post surgery check up. A cat scan had revealed the tumour had returned and was very large for that time frame. After much confusion from doctors who were puzzled with the aggressive nature of the tumour, Katie’s condition was finally diagnosed as brain cancer. The news was devastating and Katie needed to prepare for more surgery.

The cancer is called Glioblastoma Multiforme and Katie is committed to fighting it.

At 27 years old Katie has already maxed out the amount of radiation you can have in a lifetime through all her treatments. Let’s Floor Cancer! was created with Katie in mind. To allow Katie and all those affected by cancers an added chance to fight and beat this disease. Contributions to Lets Floor Cancer! will be given to Katie and the Cancer society to improve quality of life and to help with treatment expenses and research costs. Please help Cambridge Floors give back and allow Lets Floor Cancer! to ease the burden on one of my dearest friends while also help all those people who are battling cancer.

Sincerely,

Alexander Mende
